  • 2006 Red Rock Pinot Noir – Il Migliore
  • 2006 Gravel Knob Pinot Noir
  • 2006 José S. Ferrer Pinot Noir
  • 2007 Carneros Pinot Noir
  • 2006 Carneros Merlot

In Inglese: Two Days with Wine Without Drinking – Gloria Ferrer (Sonoma)

7 Aug 2011

11:03 p

How strange is it that this weekend I had two experiences with the wine, but I did not drink anything? The first experience was with my wine I am making this year. Three months ago, I changed the container for my wine to remove sediment and put in oak chips in the wine. At that point, I felt that my wine was young and needed more time to grow. I tasted the wine a few days ago and I thought it was better and ready to live on its own for the next few months. So, I spent time on Saturday changing the container again and removing the oak chips. But, since I had to fly in the afternoon I couldn’t taste my wine on Saturday…only do the job of a winemaker.

The First Time at Gloria Ferrer with Kaitlyn

Today was another day that I couldn’t enjoy the pleasure of drinking wine, but I could give my friends (Clara and Claudia) a memorable wine experience. Almost three weeks ago, Kaitlyn and I went to Petaluma for a day for a party at my friend’s house, Philipp. Along the way, we went to a winery for a while. I felt it would be a good idea since we had almost two hours before the party, and Kaitlyn and I often do not have time to spend a day of wine tasting in Sonoma. So I looked around for wineries with my iPhone, I found one called Gloria Ferrer.

Gloria Ferrer Winery is a very beautiful winery in the Carneros region in south of Sonoma Valley. The region is famous for its Pinot Noir, Rosé and Chardonnay. That day, Kaitlyn and I had five wines:

  • Red Rock 2006 Pinot Noir – The Best One
  • 2006 Gravel Knob Pinot Noir
  • 2006 San Jose Ferrer Pinot Noir
  • 2007 Carneros Pinot Noir
  • 2006 Carneros Merlot

We really liked the 2006 Pinot Noir Red Rock but we didn’t buy anything that day. However, when Kaitlyn and I were outside taking pictures, I noticed there was an airport across the street.

The Journey to Gloria Ferrer Clara and Claudia

And so today, I had the opportunity to take my friends (Clara and Claudia) to the same place – but this time it was by airplane. Clara and I had planned to fly this afternoon and when I made the suggestion to go to winery, she thought it was a wonderful idea. We arrived at the airport at 3:15 in the afternoon after a short flight from San Carlos, CA (you can read an article about the flight at Jarard.com – The Pilot). Even though the airport is located across the street, the walk is about 1.25 miles. But for us, it was a good day for walking, especially through the vineyards in the sun on a nearly perfect day.

At Gloria Ferrer, Clara drank the Pinot Noir 2008 Carneros Rosé and Claudia had the 2008 Carneros Chardonnay. I didn’t had anything except a little sip of the two. But with those two sips, I can say that I had all the wines of Gloria Ferrer list in this season. (I did not have more than a sip today because I was the pilot of flight). 🙂 We spent almost an hour to Gloria Ferrer telling stories about our lives and our dreams with two glasses of wine, salami, and crackers.

As we left, we walked down the driveway of Gloria Ferrer, which was very long (almost .75 mile), while people drove by us in their cars. There we were, walking down the street with a bag of wines back to our airplane for a flight home (almost like a scene from a movie). It’s moments like these that I feel lucky to be a pilot and share the pleasure and passion with my friends – especially wine experiences.

Thanks to Clara and Claudia for an incredible day and for letting me share my passion for aviation and wine. I hope we can do it again one day.
