Fino a prossima volta!

In Inglese: Blending Syrah in Napa

The past week has been another interesting week with wine. In my article – A Quick Hop to Half Moon Bay – I mentioned my past Friday at a wine tasting with friends. There, we tried about nine Zinfandel wines. What was strange was that my first wine that night was a Ridge Zinfandel and to my surprise, it was not the best of the night. One of the wines we liked was a Trinitas Zinfandel – a vineyard in Napa, CA. The vineyard is interesting because they have a great villa alongside their vineyard full of grapes, and a hotel spa and wine bar in a cave. Well, I took their informacion in case I’m in the area one day.

On Wednesday, I received a message from one of my friends for dinner that same night at her house to celebrate the end of initial negotiations with our nurses. That night, she cooked lasagna with salad and bread. The dinner was magnificent. We drank almost one and a half bottles of wine and one that I liked was the 2008 Hahn Syrah. I am surprised that a Syrah 2008 was as good it was but after a good dinner and three hours of conversation, almost any wine would be good.

Well, Saturday I took a trip to Napa to try our wine from Crushpad and try to figure out a good blend with my group. In February, I went to Crushpad while they were still in San Francisco for a “Client Mashup.” But since there was confusion I wasn’t able to try our wine. But I think everything worked in the end, because on this day, I was able try our wine and try various belnds to find the best taste. Although it a long ride to Napa…it was great. I really like driving in the area and it reminds me alot of many memories of my days in the past with my ex-girlfriend in Napa and Sonoma.

Our wine consists of grapes from Whitehawk Vineyard Syrah near Santa Barbara, CA. We bought and harvested the grapes in October 2008. Now, the wine is ready to be blended. And even though the day was a bit cold, we met on the patio of Crushpad. Our first taste was only of the wine without anything else. At first it was good, big with alot of fruit, but it seemed chalky and heavy to me in the finish. Michael, our wine maker, said that our wine “had length but was light in the middle.” He did recommend that we should try a blend with Petite Sirah or Mouvedre (also called Mataro in Spain). He mentioned Viognier also but said that grape takes away from the wine since Syrah is a red grape and Viognier is a white grape. Therefore, we tested six combinations of blends:

  • Syrah with 5% Petite Sirah
  • Syrah with 2% Mouvedre
  • Syrah with 2.5% Petite Sirah
  • Syrah with 2.5% Petite Sirah and 1% Mouvedre
  • Syrah with 3.5% Petite Sirah
  • Syrah with 3.5% Petite Sirah and 1% Mouvedre

It was incredible to see the small differences with the various blends but I mostly liked the blends with Mouvedre. I think they made the wine smooth and allowed it to maintain its color and fruit. In the end, the last blend won and I was happy. Now, I’m excited to finish the process with this wine and have it for myself and my friends.

During my ride to home, I went to the vineyard in Napa – Trinitas. The villa is huge and the cave is interesting. I can see that I’ll go there one day. It is close the Napa airport and it seems like a great place to spend a weekend with a girlfriend. I bought a bottle of Zinfandel and one of Mataro from Trinitas. I will give the bottle to my friends as a gift this week for the dinner on Wednesday. I hope they like it. Until next time!
