San Francisco, California

Vamos a ver!

En Ingles: A Little Vacation in My City

Well although this site is about my travels, it’s also about my Spanish adventures. Though I have not gone anywhere since my successful trip to Guadalajara two months ago, I’ve progressed with my Spanish. Now I feel like I don’t have to think alot when I’m listening to people talking in Spanish. I can make the connections and understand the context while my mind is figuring out all the words that the person just said. It is amazing in the last two years I have progressed as a Spanish speaker and as a pilot. As I said in my last post in my site – Jarard.com – The Pilot – I’m much more relaxed. And so, it was ironic that after my flight with my maestra, Delia, on Friday night, I went to San Francisco participate in a Meetup with people in the group called “Spanish Speakers. “

Every month, the SF group has a meeting with alot people in the city. But this was my first time attending a meetup of theirs in SF. At first, I felt a little uncomfortable because when I arrived there were many people on the second floor chatting. But at the same time, it seemed as one of my vacation outside the United States. When I go to Mexico or Spain, I don’t know anyone and yet I can meet lots of people. And so I ordered a drink and some food (because I was very hungry after my flight that night), and sat on a sofa so I could people watch and find my rhythm with the situation.

After a few minutes, a few people sat next to me and my conversations began. The first person was a guy from Puebla, Mexico. But it was very funny that when he started talking to me, asked me if I spoke Spanish. I said “yes”, but at times he spoke to me in English and Spanish. I think that I talked to him in Spanish more than he spoke to me in Spanish. There were also two women – one from Ecuador and one from Chile. They talked to me about their lives, work, and all the reasons that brought them to the United States. After about an hour of chatting with them and a few folks around us, we all went downstairs to dance for a while. It felt like a vacation outside the U.S. and exactly what I was looking because I could not go to Mexico for the past couple of months.

The best thing about the night was that I felt much more relaxed talking with many people who were from many different places. They had different accents and used a few different words, but I could understand most of what they told me. It made me feel very satisfied with myself and my progress with the language. Now I want to go to Mexico again. Maybe in two months I will return to Mexico City for two days to visit the museums that I could not visit my first time in January and then spend two days in Puerto Vallarta with my friends. Perhaps I might be able to visit another meetup in SF or Chicago (when I go back in two weeks). We’ll see!
