What up from Tahoe!

What up from Tahoe!

My Year
2009 was another good year for the most part. Outside of the lost of a friend close to me, my year was good. I started the year in Madrid, Spain, traveled around the country, wrote and designed two books, took many flights around the Bay Area, and even traveled to Europe to visit three new cities (London, Munich, and Prague). During the year, I wanted to plan a trip to Buenos Aires for the end of the year, but for various reasons, I could not go. Instead, I was invited to go to Lake Tahoe with some friends to celebrate not only New Year, but also my birthday with two other guys who were celebrating their thirtieth birthdays, like me.

The Tahoe House
The trip to Tahoe would be interesting because there would be nearly 20 people in a house and many of them didn’t know each other. I knew about 5 people but like my trip to Spain last year, I’m used to meeting new people. Jorge, the organizer, called it a social experiment. And I thought of it as an episode of “Real World – Tahoe.”

What was interesting was that with almost 20 people, the house did not seem so crowded. And all the people were good people, and then for most part, there weren’t many problems. And also, overall, the trip was low cost. We ate and drank well, and it didn’t cost much.

Snowboarding in Heaven

Although I wanted to go to Buenos Aires this New Year and celebrate on the beach in the summer, a trip to Tahoe with the snow was not bad for me. My only problem with trips to Tahoe is the fact of driving in the snow on the way there and back. While I’m there, I am fine with the snow… especially on the slopes. I had not snowboarded in nearly two years and I knew my skills were limited. But I was determined to increase my skills during this trip. The first day, Thursday (New Year’s Eve), I went to the ski slopes and concentrated on trying to get my balance and ability to stop. Before I had only snowboarded three times in my life and had never really taken any classes. Each time, I just tried to learn more and more. But falling was my way to save myself and others from injury.

My first time on the slopes, I fell a lot but it was fun for me. Falling in the snow is fun … as long as I am in control of my body. But during my second attempt, one of the men in the park (Heavenly), he told me that my board was not arranged well for me. He suggested that when arrive at the base that I should ask someone to help me with my board. When I reached the base, I could not find any workers to help me. Instead, I met a young man whose name I do not remember, but he helped me with my board and after that, I felt much better on my board. I felt so good that after spending a little time with Benson and Manju (my friends) for lunch, I went for two more passes on the slopes. Then I started feeling much better on my board and wanted to snowboard more. But it was time to close for Heavenly and had to catch my ride back home.

My second and last time snowboarding was the day after the New Year’s Day. I went with a mission to improve my skills from the green runs to the blue runs. Greens are the slopes for beginners, and I wanted to do the intermediate runs. And I did them much better that day. I felt that I was in more control of my body and my board. And the blue runs and their views were beautiful. Yes, occasionally I fell to stop myself from hurting me and others, but I kept getting much better. After my first ride, I stopped at Snow Beach for a perfect lunch on the slopes (a hot dog and Gatorade). They were perfect! Especially after my trip to Germany and Prague, occasionally I feel like eating a good hot dog. 🙂 In my last past, I rode along the mountain ridge and again the view was gorgeous. I had the goal of snowbarding down a steep slope without falling … and would you believe that I did it! I went down the slope called World Cup, without falling and it was a good way to end my time on the slopes. I was very proud of myself!

Parties at the House
At home, we had alot of food and drinks, and so the parties were good. New Year’s Eve, we eat very well (bbq chicken, potatoes, vegetables) and drank all night. I had four glasses of sangria, beer, and a glass of champagne at midnight. Soon after midnight I was exhausted and laid down. But that’s not before I went down our homemade sled. I can not believe I did it but it was great fun. Fortunately, I broke my lanyard from Spain but that’s what happened when you have fun. The last night in the house, we had a large BBQ dinner Texas-style (I was spending time with almost 15 people from Texas), greens, potato salad, chicken, brisket, and sausages. At the end of dinner, the group surprised us, me and two guys who were celebrating our thirtieth birthdays with a cake. It was a big surprise. Benson used the time to feed me and Irfan (another guy turning 30) by hand. It was funny. We three drank a little shot of Jagermister and one of champagne to celebrate our birthdays. The cake was very tasty and I thank you the group for the surprise. It was a good way to end my trip in Tahoe and celebrate my 30th birthday.

Thank you very much to all from Tahoe and I hope we can do it again! You can see more photos of my trip to tahoe here. Enjoy!
