Londres

Big Ben, London.

Big Ben, London.

Munich

Center City, Munich, Germany.

Center City, Munich, Germany.

Y otra vez esa noche no dormí mucho.

Ella me conoce bien.

Gracias, Allison! 🙂

London

Well, I had talked about this trip for months and now it was time to go and enjoy it. Philipp met me at the airport at 10:30a and tried to grab two business class tickets for us since he had just received the good news that his company won a contract with a major company in the United States. But the agent told us that there weren’t any available. Then we walked to the door to wait for the flight to board. When we reached the gate agent called the name of Philipp and to our surprise they gave us two business class tickets for free! He is a senior member of the United Airlines frequent flyer club. So it goes without saying that our flight was very good!

We arrived in London 10 hours later in the early morning on Thursday and could not hold a room until the afternoon. So we left our bags at the hotel and left for the city. Honestly, London was a bit blurry for me. Last night I slept no more than a hour (may be) on the plane. And then, we needed to stay awake for at least another six or seven hours. But we saw the major sites, including Big Ben, Parliment, Earl’s Court, St. James Park, the government buildings, including Buckingham Palace, and even the changing of the guard. It happened by chance that we walked by there when we saw many people and thought, “what happening?”

After that, we returned to the hotel to get some much-needed sleep. We slept for about three hours before getting up and prepare for a night on the streets. We took the train to Piccadilly Circus and found a friend of a friend of Philipp’s. Piccadilly Square seems a bit like Times Square in New York. After a short walk, we ate at an Indian restaurant like the real people of London:). The food at Masala Zone was good and while walking to Carnaby Street, I asked him the about life in London – work, apartments, and the people. He knew a lot since he has lived in London for a year working for Apple (like my friends in Cupertino). We stayed for a while Shakespeare’s Head and drank a beer while people watching and talking about life in London. Before returning to the hotel, Philipp and I walked down Regent Street … a street like Park Avenue in New York or Michigan Avenue in Chicago. It was nice at 12am, but I did not care because I needed to use the bathroom. I held the pain all the way back to the hotel (about thirty minutes), so much that it hurt me but the relief was very good. 🙂 The things that one remembers on trips.

Munich

Then, the next morning we had a flight to Munich at 7:40a, and so we did not sleep much (maybe be thirty minutes). Still, we were getting used the time change. Like London, we arrived early in the morning to Munich, so we needed to find some things to do before we could enter our room. Munich is a beautiful city and since we were near the main train station, the park for Oktoberfest, and the central city, we walked. The first day we spent time getting accustomed to the city. At night, we found a guy from Philipp’s company, Karl, and we all went to the oldest beer house in Munich, the famous Hofbrauhaus. There, I had my first of many beers called – Mas. It is because it is a liter of beer. I had it with sausages and potato salad. Everything was very good, so that much that just the thought makes me want more:)!

After that, Philipp and I walked to the park to see Oktoberfest at night. We could not enter a drinking beer tent and watch the party because they were all full. But, we could walk around the park and see people and the party outside. Oktoberfest is a big party with at least 8 -10 large beer tents (in which each one can hold about 8 -10 thousand people), many small tents and many attractions and games … like a big carnival. To read more of the history of Oktoberfest, visit Wikipedia.

We returned to the hotel but I could not sleep. At about 4:30a, I went for a walk near the hotel because it was still dark outside. But as soon as there was light, I went jogging around the city. I love doing that when I travel. Needless to say, my body was weird, and so after a short breakfast and a little time with Philipp and his cousin to Oktoberfest, I returned to hotel at 1p to try to sleep.

Well, I may be slept for two hours (may be), and I decided to go for a walk in the central city. During my walk, I found a cafe called San Francisco Coffee Company and so I had to stop and try it. He was also very nice because there was a festival of art music in the street nearby. I love discovering new things on vacation. When I returned to the hotel to see my peeps, the two were sleeping like drunkards. 🙂

Something that Philipp and I wanted to do during our time in Munich was to visit the six best beer houses in Munich. So, after visiting Hofbrauhaus on Friday, we visited another, Spatenhaus, on Saturday. It was so-so. And again I did not sleep much that night. The next day we went to the BMW museum and the Olympic Park in Munich. At the end of the night, we visited another beer house – Palmaner. I liked their beer, especially one that is called a Radler. And also, I ate gazpacho…it was very good. That night we prepared to leave the next day. I went to Prague and he went to Stuttgart to see his family. We would meet each again a week later in Barcelona.

Prague

In Prague I have a friend who I met during my vacation in Spain earlier in the year. Allison and I were at the same hostels in both Seville and Granada on the same days. We started a conversation while walking in the rain after a live Flamenco show in Seville with the group from the hostel. And then the next day we saw each other at the same hotel in Granada. Very strange! And so we talked a lot during our guide of the Albaycin in Granada and also to the hostel. Given that, we stayed in touch and she told me that if I wanted to visit Prague, to let her know. So I did!

Prague was the first place in my life that I had visited where I could not read or understand the language. And outside of tourist sites, there aren’t many people who speak English (or Spanish). And for all those that know me, know that I don’t like being in tourist areas for long.

Then, after a six-hour train from Munich and navigating the trains to her house, I arrived. When I arrived, she showed me and gave me many books to help with the city. She even prepared good food … thank you very much:) And then she took me for a personal guide around the city. We went from her place to the center of town, up to the monastery and the castle (large). The castle is wonderful and once again, it happened by chance that there was a change of guard when we walked by. And then she surprised me with a stop at the steps of the castle, where there was a restaurant, a small vineyard, and terrific wine.

We stopped for a little to eat, drink and enjoy the very good view. It was wonderful! I could not have been happier with her tour. She knows me well. After that, we walked the streets in the central city, so I could get used to the city, because the next few days I would be by myself while she worked. It was a great first day in Prague and after five days in Europe, I finally slept the whole night.

The next few days in Prague, I spent a lot of time walking the streets, looking at all the buildings, eating street food (There was a street fair in Old Town Square), and even taking a walking guide with a group – I even wanted to take the guide in Spanish, but the person was ill and there were not enough people who wanted Spanish. The thing I remember most of all about Prague is its beauty. To be such an old city, the buildings are beautiful.

My last night in Prague, I went with Allison to a dinner with a group of expatriates called Internations. It was a good way to see life in Prague sight of expatriates. And again, there was an Eddie Murphy sighting (everywhere I go!). But after one hour or so, more or less, she and I left and went to a Czech bar. There, we had some Radlers and talked about life in Prague. It was a good way to end my time in Prague. Thanks, Allison! 🙂
