É Bella Anche Quando Piove

Oggi non dovrebbe essere un giorno per molto vino ma certamente é finito come così. Sono andato a OVY Camp in La Honda, CA per sopportare il mio amico Koffi e il suo nuovo campo di giovani. Per quasi cinque o sei mesi, lui ha lavorato per il campo e provando a crescere il suo cliente e servizi. Lui ha organizzato una fiera di artigiano come un modo per aumentare i soldi per il campo. Avevamo sperato che non pioverebbe il giorno della sua fiera ma ha fatto. Ancora, era un buon tempo per passare il giorno dentro con amici, cibi, e vini.

Adesso, é interessante che uno dei vigneti alla sua fiera era Kathryn Kennedy Vineyards – un vigneto da Saratoga, CA che non apre mai e uno che ha un posto speciale nella amicizia di Koffi ed io. La notte che lui ed io ci siamo incontrati quasi due anni fa, noi due stavamo bevendo un vino volo di Kathryn Kennedy a Vintage Wine Bar in San Jose. Ricordo che noi due abbiamo voluto provare i loro vini perche non si va al loro vigneto per assaggiare. E adesso, ecco qui io ero parlando con il fabbricante del vino del loro vino, il negozio di vino, la storia del vino organico, ed molte altre cose.  Nella mia vita di assaggiare i vini, ho imparato che é sempre meglio per parlare con la gente dietro alla tavola perche loro possono darti informazione e vini speciale. Quell’é esattamente lo che ha passato con Kathryn Kennedy – legge la mia reazzione al loro Cab di 2001.

C’erano anche gente da MJA Vineyards in Santa Cruz, CA, Fenestra Vineyards in Livermore, CA, e Smith Winery in La Honda. In tutto, ho provato sette vini dai quattro vigneti, includendo uno speciale da Kathryn Kennedy. Ecco qui le mie note da oggi:

Kathryn Kennedy

• 2009 Sauvignon Blanc – Non c’e male ma non emozionante.
• 2008 Lateral – Interessante e liscio
• 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon – Come “uno studente dell’ultimo anno”…buono, liscio, ma un po’ giovane comparato al 2001
• 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon – Come “una persona che ha 30 anni.” Semplicemente raffinato! Qualche cosa speciale quando tu parli con la gente dietro la tavola. 🙂

Fenestra

• 2009 Chardonnay – Un buon Chard per l’anno. Non cosi acido come molti Chards.
• True Red 25 – Sul vino del tavolo ma non era interessante a me anche se l’uomo mi ha detto che il vino ha contenuto più che 10 uve diversi nella miscela.

MJA Vineyards

• 2009 Chardonnay – Non c’e male ma non emozionante. Potevo assaggiare le mele che loro ha descritto nelle loro note. 

Smith Winery

• 2008 Pinot Noir – Molto vigoroso per un Pinot Noir. Sembrava molto giovane, quasi come se ci sia molto zucchero lasciata quando é stato imbottigliato.

In tutto, era un buon giorno e sono contento che molta gente sono venuti per sopportare Koffi e il suo negozio. Pochi dei noi già stiamo pensando di una festa al suo campo nell’estate con cibi, vini, amici, sotto una luna piena. Pensiamo che sarebbe un buon modo per aumentare i soldi per il suo campo e passare il tempo con amici e vini…come sempre.

In Inglese: It’s Beautiful Even When it Rains

Today wasn’t supposed be a day for a lot of wine but it certainly ended up as such. I went to OVY Camp in La Honda, CA to support my friend Koffi and his new camp for kids. For about five or six months, he has been working for the camp and trying to grow its clients and services. He organized an artisan fair as a way to raise money for the camp. We had hoped that it wouldn not raining the day of his show but it did. Yet, it was a good time to spend the day in with friends, food and wine.

Now, it is interesting that one of the vineyards at the fair was Kathryn Kennedy Vineyards – a vineyard from Saratoga, CA that is never open, and one that has a special place in our friendship. The night that he and I met almost two years ago, the two of us were drinking a Kathryn Kennedy wine flight at Vintage Wine Bar in San Jose. I remember the two of us wanted to try their wines because you can’t go to their vineyard to taste. And now, here I was talking with the manufacturer of the wine of their wine, the wine business, the history of organic wine, and many other things. In my life of tasting wines, I have learned that it is always best to talk with the folks behind the table because they can give you special information and special wines. That’s exactly what happended with the Kathryn Kennedy – read my reaction to their 2001 Cab.

There were also folks from MJA Vineyards in Santa Cruz, CA, Fenestra Vineyards in Livermore, CA, and Smith Winery in La Honda. In all, I tried seven wines from the four vineyards, including a special Kathryn Kennedy. Here are my notes from today:

Kathryn Kennedy

• 2009 Sauvignon Blanc – Not bad but not exciting.
• 2008 Lateral – Interesting and smooth
• 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon – “Like a senior in college” … good, smooth but a bit ‘young compared to 2001
• 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon – “Like a 30 year old.” Simply elegant! Something special when you speak with the folks behind the table. 🙂

Fenestra

• 2009 Chardonnay – A good Chard for the year. Not as acidic as many Chards.
• True Red 25 – Their table wine but it wasn’t interesting to me even though the guy told me that the wine contained more than 10 different grapes in the blend.

MJA Vineyards

• 2009 Chardonnay – Not bad but not exciting. I was able taste the green apple they described in their notes.

Smith Winery

• 2008 Pinot Noir – Very punchy for a Pinot Noir. It seemed very young, almost as if there is a lot of sugar when it was been bottled.

In all, it was a good day and I’m glad that many people came to support Koffi and his camp. A few of us are already thinking about a party at his camp in the summer with food, wine, friends, under a full moon. We think it would be a good way to raise money for his camp and spend time with friends and wine … as always.
