Mexico Otra Vez…DF y “Me Vallar”

This year I have been on a mission to travel to Mexico, learn its cities and culture and improve my spanish. In January, I went to DF for the first time and during that trip, I spent no more than one night and a morning in the city. The rest of my time was spent in surrounding cities – Teotihuacan, Tepoztlan and Cuernavaca. After that trip, I knew that I would return to again DF to spend more time exploring the city, its museums, and culture.

In March, I went to Guadalajara to get to know the second city of the country and understand what life is like in other parts of the country. I had fun in Guadalajara and so I wanted to go to Mexico again in the summer. In April, I received an invitation from my friend Benson to go to Puerto Vallarta for a weekend in July to celebrate his wife’s birthday. Like us guys during our trip to Tahoe in December, she would be celebrating her thirtieth birthday on this trip. Just like that, my third trip to Mexico was set and gave me another opportunity to visit Mexico City before my time in Puerto Vallarta.

DF…Football and Art

In 2006, I was lucky to travel to Germany during the time of the World Cup. It was a wonderful experience to be there (and Italy and Spain) during the tournament. The energy of the people and their passion is stronger outside the United States. Because of that, I was excited to go to Mexico during the tournament this year. I’ve been watching every game at home in the United States on Univision as a way to improve my spanish (and also because I don’t have cable at home). But even when I saw the games on the American channels, I did not like them. The energy was weaker on those channels and seeing them in Univision made me feel like I was in the stadium with the crowd. Given all that, I wanted to support the team in Mexico as one of my favorite teams in the tournament. I thought it would be very nice to be in the Zocalo of Mexico City during a game in Mexico. Unfortunately, Mexico lost in the last match before the quarterfinals-and thus would not be playing during my time there.

I left from San Francisco Airport on a red-eye flight at 12:40a on Thursday in the middle of the night. I chose this flight because I love to fly from SFO’s international terminal and also because I wanted to make the most of my time in Mexico City. I arrived in Guadalajara (GDL) around 6:30a and had to wait a bit for my next flight to Mexico City. While waiting for my next flight, I saw a Cessna making landings on the GDL runway and I thought back to the time when I was learning to fly. As I say in my book, The Two Musketeers, landing was very hard for me during the first five days of my lessons. But after taking a day away from the plane, my frustration, and allowing myself to relax, I went back to the sky and was about to figure it out. From that point, landings have not been a big problem for me. In fact, that is something that most people who fly with me gives me complements about. And then it hit me, my spanish is similar to that. Sometimes I get very frustrated with my spanish and I put alot of pressure on myself, all of which that makes me feel shy and I start losing my confidence (with the language and my personality in general). But with a little time, when I make time to relax and enjoy the language (the exact advice from my maestra, Delia), I can talk almost without thinking. It would be very ironic that this thought came to me during my time in GDL, because it didn’t stay with me very long during my trip.

My First Day in Mexico City

After a bit of confusion at GDL with our flight, we left almost ontime to DF. It’s a short flight, and I arrived in DF around 11a ready to sign up at my hotel and walk the streets. As always, I used the first few hours to get used to the city again and organize my plans to see the sites. I had a little nap around 2p for two hours and then got ready to leave for my first afternoon and evening. That day, I went to the Historical Center to see the Zocalo where the FIFA Fan Fest was – the area with large TVs to watch football matches. I also went to the National Palace (with many armed guards with machine guns) to see the inside and some murals by Diego Rivera. The art and history of this art was magnificent (click here to watch a video of his art). My first time in DF I had no time to see the art of Diego and Frida, and so this time I wanted to spend time looking at their art. Then I went to Latin American Tower to enjoy the view from there, have a sangria, eat ceviche for dinner, and listen to live jazz. The views were good and so was the sangría. The tower is the highest in Mexico and you can see almost the whole city from the 41st floor, where there is restaurant called Miralta. And also, the tower was built in the 1950s in the Art Deco style. The live jazz was in this period and so if you had closed your eyes, you feel like it was in the 1950s.

I had been thinking about going to Zinco (jazz club) that night but when I got there they were charging almost $500 MX (or nearly $ 40 U.S.) for the show that night. I didn’t want to spend that much for no more than see the club, and so I returned to my hotel for the rest of the night. My hotel (Hotel De Cortes Boutique) was a colonial hotel. When I was in GDL, stayed in a colonial hotel and liked it a lot. I prefer to stay in mexican hotels instead of the large chains or american hotels when I travel to Mexico. The hotel had a restaurant and lounge bar on the roof that stays open until 2am. I went up to enjoy the view and have a drink before bed. I met a woman Sandra there and spent a little time talking with her about life in the city and her life. It was a good way to end my first day in the city.

My Second and Last Day in Mexico City

Well, the first football match (Brazil v. Netherlands) started at 9am and so I had to get up a little early to have time to prepare and have breakfast before leaving. The hotel (like everywhere in Mexico City) had many flat-screen TVs to watch games in the lobby. In fact, once I realized that, I decided to watch the first part of the party at the hotel while having breakfast. At halftime I walked very quickly from my hotel to the Zocalo to see the second part. I’m glad I did because although there were not as many people as it would have been if Mexico was playing, there were still many people there and the energy during the game (which was very tense) was exciting. After watching Holland surprise the world and win against Brazil, I went to el Museo de la Cuidad. There, I wanted to see the history of the city (which is very interesting), its local art, and a surprise exhibition. Unfortunately, I could not take pictures of an exhibition of Pierre Soulages, an artist who only uses the color black. But the expense to see his art was worth it. After that, I walked through the streets in the Historic Center with my iPod and took in all the energy of the big city at noon. Then I went to Bellas Artes to see more art. There they have large murals by Diego Riviera, Jose Orozco (an artist whose art I saw in GDL), and about two or three other artists. I love the art of those two because it is so vivid, colorful, and always tells a great story. Again, I wasn’t able to take pictures of art.

For lunch, I went to the restaurant on the roof of the Majestic Hotel across the street from the Zocalo. I ate enchiladas and I tried a michelada for the first time. The driver from my first taxi driver in Mexico City mentioned it to me and so I tried it, but I did not like it. From the roof, I saw folks begin to fill the Zocalo before the start of the second game (Ghana v. Uruguay). And so, I saw the first part of that game in the Zocalo, but went to the mall (Parque Alameda) during halftime. As I was leaving the mall, I saw many people in the center watching the game on the TVs. So I stayed for a bit and watched the game. It was a good game that went into extra time. I finished watching the game at my hotel with almost everyone there because almost everything stopped during the final minutes of the game. It was so interesting. That night, I was very tired and had to get up very early the next day for my flight to Puerto Vallarta. So I spent the rest of the afternoon and night at my hotel.

Two Days in PV

The main reason for my trip to PV was to see my friends. Because of things at my job, I had to wait to buy my tickets to PV and book my hotel. Given that, I didn’t book a room at my friends’ hotel. And also, I wanted to stay closer to the center so I could walk the streets, eat with the people of the city, and have an urban experience even I was situated in a seaside town.

Before we talk about PV, I have to mention two things that I thought wre very strange for my flight to PV. The first happened when I was getting on the plane. There was an Asian family (they looked Chinese to me) that were ahead of me looking for their seats. For a second, I put my attention to their conversation and I realized they were talking to each other in spanish. It was the first time in my life that I saw asians speaking spanish. I guess it’s no different than seeing the same people speaking english in America but that which was strange was that it was a family with kids and elders, and normally the elders speak their native language to the kids. Not in this case. The other thing that was strange was that during the flight I sat next to a nurse from Chicago. At first, she was talking to me in english but I could see she was with her children and she was talking to them in english and spanish. So while she started talking to me in english and  I answered in Spanish with “yes” or something short and realized that I could speak Spanish. And so I spent the flight talking to her about her work, her favorite music, and her plans for a week with their children in PV. A few minutes before we landed, the pilot told us the final score in the match between Germany and Argentina. Germany won 4-0, and everyone on the plane applauded. It was very also very strange that in every game I saw in Mexico, people always supported the countries that were playing against Latin American countries.

The “Vallar” in Vallarta

Once I arrived at PV and checked myself into my room at the Hotel Bonaventure, I left my room to get used to the city and people. Thank God we did not get much sun in PV during my days there because it was very humid and hot. After a little walk and a little time on the beach, I became very bored. Yes I was there to meet with my friends but we were having trouble connecting and I could not connect with them until late my first night. And so we made plans to meet up the next day in the afternoon.

Instead, that day I met two or three people at my hotel, a couple from Toronto and a man from San Jose, CA (yes.. weird). But with all the time to spend in the hotel or on the beach, I became bored and my personality started to reflect it. I felt that PV was a place that was best for couples or families, but for one man alone that likes being an urban traveler it was not so good. As a result, naturally I started to fence in myself in my mind.

It’s very interesting to me that the word “vallar” means “to fence in” and the word “valle” means “valley.” Each word is similar to Vallarta and the two help explain my time there.

I tried to pick myself up during this time, because I could see it happening and I did not want to spend it in that way. It didn’t help me that I was staying in a very romantic room and I was alone. Also, because of my thoughts, the valley that I began to enter, and the lack of many things to excite me, my personality became more shy and also my way of speaking spanish. It was a cascading effect. The good thing is that I understand  myself and when things are happening, and that I have to do something different to change the rhythm and energy.

The next day, I got up and got ready for my tennis lesson at Canto del Sol. Outside of gathering with my friends, playing tennis on a clay court, was the only other thing I wanted to do in PV. But unfortunately it started raining when I arrived at Canto del Sol and so, I canceled my lesson for the day and booked one for the next morning. So, there I was here in town a bit boring for me and the only thing I needed to do was be outside my room. But it was raining (WTF!). Somehow, I found movies on TV to pass the time until I went to Dreams (the hotel where my friends were staying). After a taxi ride and what felt like an entrance to “Fort Knox”, I met up with my friends for the rest of the afternoon. I paid a fee for the entire afternoon (about $50 US) and thus all drinks and food I wanted was included. Trust me, I ate and drank very well that evening. It was good to meet up with Benson, Manju, and their friends. It was July 4 (Independence Day for the United States) and the hotel was pretty much american. And so they shot fireworks on the beach for two minutes when we were having dinner at a restaurant on the beach. It was very nice!

After that, I returned to my hotel. That night, I did not want to go sleep very early (it was around 12a), and so I went downstairs for a drink and to meet people at the beach bar. I found the folks from the day before and got to know them a little more. We hung out until three in the morning talking (completely in english) in the lobby. At least, it was a way to spend time for the night.

The next morning, I was able to finally take my tennis lesson. It was my first time playing on a clay court and it is true that is different di hard courts. But it was good exercise and I sweated there more than I ever have sweat playing tennis at home. But it was because of the humidity more than anything else. After my lesson, I had to leave my room and find something to do before my flight later in the day (at 7p that ended up being even two hours more late). I walked around the marina, went for a massage, and chilled on the beach in my jeans (yes.. I know it’s stupid.) But again, I had too much time to be bored with myself. The day was very long and I tried very hard to pick myself up but the end of my trip made me feel bad for the rest of my week when I returned home. It took me almost a week to climb from the valley that I entered during my time in PV.

Peaks and Valleys…The Lesson

As I say, sometimes trips are about places and sometimes they are to learn more about the person. My time in DF was about the city but the time in PV was more about understanding myself. I always try to make something good out of any situation, no matter how bad. And also, I believe that when a person is in a valley is to so that they can see the peaks, and at the peaks they need to remember the valleys. In PV, I was in a valley and it gave me time to think about what I had and what I wanted for myself and in my life.

Earlier this year, I made a goal for myself to have more confidence in myself. During this year, I have done a lot to demonstrate it, but after this trip, I know that I still have more to learn and do. But I’m ready for the challenge. The good thing about this trip is that my spanish was much better … I could hear and understand almost everything. And I know that with more confidence I could talk (and think of my words) more relaxed. I am ready to continue my dream and I will use every opportunity to succeed. Until next time!
